Since 1982, Hawaiian Dredging Construction Company (HDCC) and Bay Machinery have had a prosperous business relationship. Soon after Bay Machinery began to handle Bauer’s line of drilling equipment, HDCC began winning several drilled foundation jobs, but had too few reliable drill rigs. The drill of choice was a Bauer BG-28V.
Originally a 4 month rental to drill 30” and 42” shafts for a condominium complex at 909 Kapiolani in Honolulu, HDCC decided to keep this 275 kNm (202,830 ft.lbs.) machine busy. It is currently drilling 42” shafts 90 feet at the Ala Moana Shopping Center Extension near Waikiki Beach in Honolulu, and is scheduled to drill 60” shafts, 165’ deep for a new bridge on the big island of Hawaii in the fourth quarter of 2006.
Buddy Kaialau, HDCC’s lead operator, won’t let any one else operate “his baby.” Buddy loves the touch screen controls, as well as the ease and speed of operation of the unit. “I’d take it home on weekends and wax it if they would let me.”
“The production with the BG28 has been superior to everything else we have tried” says Jim Prentice, jobsite superintendent.
Special thanks go out to Mr. Manfred Dreier from Bauer in helping us put this rental together. Thanks also to our friends at Hawaiian Dredging. Especially Messrs. Cedric Ota and Jim Prentice.
